1981   Mon premier ordinateur personnel !   My first computer !

Mon premier ordinateur a été un Texas Instruments datant de 1981 sur lequel j'ai commencé à développer des petits programmes en BASIC (spécial TI-BASIC) et mes jeunes enfants ont très vite adopté cet appareil pour les jeux proposés qui étaient déjà très performants pour l'époque.

My first computer was a Texas Instruments dating from 1981 on which I began to develop small programs in "TI-BASIC" and my young children very quickly adopted this device for the games offered, which were already very powerful at the time.

Les jeux étaient vendus séparément sous la forme de cartouches ROM qu'il fallait encastrer à droite du clavier (QWERTY). J'ai pu retrouver plus tard ces jeux reconstitués et adaptés aux PC actuels sous la forme d'un logiciel très bien construit.

The games were sold separately in the form of cartridges that were plugged into the computer. I was able to find these games which have been reconstructed and adapted to current PCs in the form of very well-built software.

Décompressez les fichiers dans un répertoire quelconque puis ouvrez le fichier nommé TI99-4A

Unzip the files in a directory then open the TI99-4A file...  

Selectionner «Cartridge»  puis «Games» (16 jeux disponibles)

Select Cartridge then Games (16 games available)

Taper 1 pour programmer en TI-BASIC, 2 pour accéder au jeu sélectionné

Type 1 to program in BASIC, 2 to play the selected game

1984   Ensuite, en 1984, j'ai acheté mon premier PC à base de processeur INTEL 80286 à 16 bits et j'ai commencé à travailler sur MSDOS_5 puis MSDOS_6, MSDOS_6.2

                        Then, in 1984, I bought my first 16-bit INTEL 80286 processor based PC and started working on MSDOS_5 and then MSDOS_6., MSDOS _6.2.

Les applications proposées à l'époque étaient par exemple WORKS 2 de Microsoft, j'utilisais aussi un très bon logiciel de géographie PCGLOBE  fonctionnant sous MSDOS et qui était remarquablement bien réalisé pour l'époque.

The applications offered at the time were for example WORKS 2 from Microsoft, I also used a very good PCGLOBE geography software running under MSDOS and which was remarkably well done for the time.

A la même période, j'ai commencé à emmener mes élèves dans une Maison des Jeunes et de la Culture (MJC) de la commune de Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon  où les premiers ordinateurs étaient accessibles, des TO7-70 de THOMSON et quelques gros GOUPIL II avec une disquette souple  5,25 pouces"système" et une autre disquette souple 5,25 pouces "fichiers"... Sur les TO7-70, les enregistrements se faisaient sur un lecteur de K7.

At the same time, I started taking my students to a Maison des Jeunes et de la Culture (MJC) in the town of Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon where the first computers were accessible, TO7-70s from THOMSON and some big GOUPIL II with a 5.25 "system" floppy disk and another 5.25 "file" floppy disk ... On the TO7-70s, the recordings were made on a K7 drive.

1985   L'année suivante, j'emmenais mes élèves travailler sur un «nano-réseau» lancé en 1985 par le premier ministre Laurent FABIUS, les appareils étaient fabriqués par THOMSON, il s'agissait de MO5 et de TO7-70 reliés en réseau dans une salle de classe dédiée à l'informatique. Le problème est que cette salle informatisée servait aux classes de 2 écoles et donc l'accès était très restreint ...

The following year, I took my students to work on a "nano-network" launched in 1985 by Prime Minister Laurent FABIUS, the devices were manufactured by THOMSON, they were MO5 and TO7-70 connected in a network in a classroom dedicated to IT. The problem is that this computerized room was used for classes from 2 schools and therefore access was very restricted ...

Je les faisais travailler sur du traitement de texte (WORKS 2) et sur des petits logiciels éducatifs pas très performants, genre opérations et calculs rapides

I made them work on word processing (WORKS 2) and on small educational software not very efficient, like operations and rapid calculations

1990    J'ai ensuite acheté, en 1990, une suite bureautique très performante à l'époque: «GEOWORKS ENSEMBLE» qui sera malheureusement remplacée par Microsoft Windows Office… 

GEOWORKS, ou PC/GEOS, était une interface graphique pour les compatibles PC créée par la société Berkeley Softworks, connue plus tard sous le nom de GeoWorks.

La première version de GeoWorks est sortie en 1990. Elle offrait des performances impressionnantes pour l'époque : interface graphique à icônes (basée sur Motif), polices vectorielles, multitâche, et ce même sur PC/XT. Ses performances étaient excellentes en comparaison de Windows 3.0 car GeoWorks était programmé directement en assembleur !!!

À l'époque, GeoWorks était livré d'origine avec de nombreux PC, mais il céda en fin de compte la place à Windows, de même que les autres interfaces graphiques alternatives comme GEM.

I then bought, in 1990, a very powerful office suite at the time: “GEOWORKS ENSEMBLE” which unfortunately will be replaced by Microsoft Windows Office...

«GeoWorks», or «PC / GEOS», is a graphical interface for PC compatible devices created by the Berkeley Softworks company, later known as GeoWorks.

The first version of GeoWorks was released in 1990. It offered impressive performance for the time: iconic graphical interface (based on Motif), scalable fonts, multitasking, even on PC / XT. Its performance was excellent compared to Windows 3.0 because GeoWorks was programmed directly in assembler.

Back then, GeoWorks originally came with many PCs, but it eventually gave way to Windows, along with other alternative GUIs like GEM

1995  Puis ce fut le triomphe de Microsoft Windows !  J'avais très peu utilisé Windows 3.1, préférant mon GEOWORKS ENSEMBLE mais ce logiciel ne fut pas mis à jour, j'ai donc acheté un nouveau PC à base de WINDOWS 95

                    Then it was the triumph of Microsoft Windows! I had used Windows 3.1 very little, preferring my GEOWORKS ENSEMBLE but this software was not updated, so I bought a new PC based on WINDOWS 95

A cette époque, j'ai commencé à développer des logiciels sous Visual BASIC pour MSDOS  (VBDOS) car l'environnement MSDOS était encore très puissant par rapport à Windows où les bugs et blocages étaient nombreux. J'ai développé mes premiers logiciels éducatifs pour mes élèves ainsi qu'une gestion d'école pour mes collègues directeurs d'école.

A cette époque, les directeurs géraient les restaurants scolaires et nous devions établir à la fin de chaque mois les factures des repas pour chaque famille. Mon logiciel VBDOS  permettait d'imprimer en quelques minutes toutes les factures sur du papier listing perforé avec une imprimante à aiguilles. Le soir même, les factures pliées en 3 dans des enveloppes commerciales  à fenêtre étaient remises aux parents d'élèves.

At that time, I started to develop software under Visual BASIC for MSDOS (VBDOS) because the MSDOS environment was still very powerful compared to Windows where the bugs and crashes were numerous. I developed my first educational software for my students as well as school management for my fellow school directors.

At that time, the directors managed the school restaurants and we had to prepare the meal bills for each family at the end of each month. My VBDOS software made it possible to print all invoices in a few minutes on perforated listing paper with a needle printer. The same evening, the invoices folded in 3 in commercial window envelopes were given to the parents of the students.

Mais comme pour GEOWORKS, je n'ai pas fait le bon choix car VBDOS a été abandonné par Microsoft au profit de VB4 et il a fallu que je recommence tout mon travail de programmation de mes logiciels.

But as for GEOWORKS, I did not make the right choice because VBDOS was abandoned by Microsoft in favor of VB4 and I had to start all my programming work again.

1998    Et bien sûr, en 1998, j'ai encore changé de PC pour découvrir WINDOWS 98 et toutes les nouvelles applications.

                        And of course, in 1998, I changed my PC again to discover WINDOWS 98 and all the new applications. 

A cette époque, j'ai réussi à créer dans ma propre école une salle informatique en récupérant des PC auprès de grandes entreprise françaises comme EDF, les appareils étaient des PC compatibles 80286 à 16 bits, 80386 à 32 bits. Mais ils permettaient l'installation des logiciels pour le traitement de texte sous WORKS 2 puis WORKS 3, sur WORD 6. Nous avions une seule imprimante à aiguilles  pour feuilles de listing  perforées. La commune a accepté d'effectuer les installations électriques et de sécuriser la salle pour éviter les vols.

J'y installais mes propres logiciels de stratégie mathématique, un logiciel d'initiation aux échecs, un logiciel d'initiation à la création de conte (CONTE 2) , les premiers logiciels éducatifs disponibles développés par des éditeurs...

At that time, I managed to create a computer room in my own school by recovering PCs from large French companies like EDF, the devices were 80286 16-bit, 80386 32-bit compatible PCs. But they allowed the installation of software for word processing under WORKS 2 then WORKS 3, on WORD 6. We had a single needle printer for perforated listing sheets. The town agreed to perform the electrical installations and secure the room to prevent theft.

I installed my own mathematical strategy software there, chess initiation software, storytelling initiation software (CONTE 2), the first available educational software developed by publishers ...

Cette année-là, j'avais eu la chance d'obtenir l'aide d'un «emploi-jeune» qui gérait cette nouvelle salle informatique et faisait travailler les élèves des autres classes par demi-groupes ...

That year, I had the chance to get the help of a "job-youth" who managed this new computer room and made the students of other classes work in half-groups ...

WINDOWS 98 en fonction sous Virtualbox en 2020 !!!

2000   Je suis parti à la retraite en juin 2000. Je me suis mis à travailler sous WINDOWS XP , j'ai continué à adapter mes logiciels de gestion d'école sous VB4 et je les fournissais gratuitement à mes anciens collègues directeurs d'école puis l'Education Nationale a créé ses propres logiciels de gestion avec l'obligation de les utiliser pour les directeurs. Mon logiciel de gestion a donc été inutilisé désormais...

I retired in June 2000. I started working under WINDOWS XP, I continued to adapt my school management software to VB4 and I provided them free of charge to my former school principal colleagues then l 'Education Nationale has created its own management software with the obligation to use them for directors. My management software has therefore been unused now ...
